Meals on Wheals

About

Meals On Wheels is a non-profit community program, that is under the umbrella of the Auxiliary to the Penticton Regional Hospital Society. We provide Hot, Frozen, and nutritious meals that are delivered to those who are unable to cook for themselves. Our service allows our clients to stay home longer and provide continous contact to those who may have none. Our clients are also able relay any concerns for their health to our volunteer drivers. As volunteers, we are happy to do a service for someone else. Our office is located in the basement of the Penticton Regional Hospital next to the cafeteria. We deliver on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays (including holidays) between 11:30 and 1 pm, to residents of Penticton, Naramata, Kaledan and Okanagan Falls. We only deliver salads on Wednesdays.

Breakfast Learning Club

In June 2011 the Penticton School Board approached Meals On Wheels to provided nutritious breakfasts 5 days a week at 3 elementary schools: Columbia, Queen’s Park and West Bench. This program began Sept. 2011.This service is provided, as far too many children go to school hungry. A few months after the start of this program, the schools’ staffs commented on how behaviour and attendance has improved. The students are offered a varied healthy menu Mondays through Fridays. Our volunteers are there from 7:45 – 9:00 am. We would like 3 volunteers per day at each school, which requires 45 volunteers. You can volunteer for one or more days. A criminal record check is required.

Volunteers

Meals on Wheels

Volunteers of Meals on Wheels, are the foundation of our services, and are hardworking and caring people. However, in many cases our volunteers benefit from us as much as we benefit from them. Often our volunteers create a close relationship with our clients and feel that they have become part of their extended family and, are warmed by the smiling faces as meals are delivered. We need help delivering meals, and packaging them for delivery, as well as extra volunteers to help when our regular ones have other commitments. It's a great way to meet new people and make new friends. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us anytime, during our regular operating hours. You can see the smiles on clients’ faces when you arrive with their meal. Many of our volunteers feel our clients become part of their extended family. It is a great way to meet new people and make new friends.

Breakfast Learning Club

As a volunteer for the Breakfast Learning Club you not only will have the opportunity to help families in need but you will also watch as children become more comfortable interacting with their peers and children of other ages. Many children who are very shy at the beginning, develop a willingness to share with you special events in their lives. There is also an improvement in manners, such as please and, thank you and, the older children often help those who are younger. We provide three volunteers per day, at each school, from 7:45 - 9:00 am, which requires 45 volunteers. You can volunteer for one or more days. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Meals on Wheels anytime during our regular operating hours.

BLC - A criminal record check is required.

MOW - A criminal record check as well as an orientation session with the volunteer coordinator, for the hospital, is necessary.
